Medieval Monastery of St. John the Baptist
The Medieval Monastery “St. John the Forerunner” is located in the town of Kardzhali, in the Veselchane district, opposite the Traffic Police Department. During the Middle Ages, it was the main spiritual center of the region known as “Ahridos” – the historical name of today’s Kardzhali area. Today, the monastic complex “St. John the Forerunner” is a cultural monument and an active Orthodox church. From the monastery itself, there is an impressive view of the so-called “Water Mirror”, built along the Arda River.
